Happy Wednesday!

Hello, learning friends!

Today in Math we worked in randomized groups of three to solve two different ratio word problems. After we had a chance to work out the answers on a non-permanent work surface, we wrote down our best thinking on paper and handed it in. Please ask me about my group's strategies and solutions.

Haïku - Le chandail de hockey

Hello! Happy Monday!

Today in Français we started writing "Devinez-vous Haïku," inspired by the video Le chandail de hockey that we watched in class last week. Our Haïku will take on a "Qui suis-je" (Who am I?) form and will include descriptive language to give clues about our person/item without actually revealing who or what it is.

As a class, we brainstormed possible ideas and voted to collaboratively write about "la boîte" (the parcel) that should contain Roch's new Canadiens sweater.

Working as a class, and through turn and talks with our peers, we were able to write 7 different Haïku! Wow!

Our next step is to chose our own subject and write a Haïku independently. Students are encouraged to begin brainstorming ideas this evening so that they are ready to go in class tomorrow! Our goal is to have our own Haïku published by the end of the morning on Wednesday. Stay tuned!

Le chandail de hockey

Hello, learning friends!

Despite being blowy and snowy outside, we were nice and warm and ready to learn in Rooms 202+203 this morning!

1. Bravo to: Ciara, Joseph, Olivia, Adi, Ava, Elliott, Jacob and Olive who all did a great job presenting their CFOO speeches this morning! We look forward to hearing from Group B tomorrow!

2. Today, as part of our intro to our upcoming novel study, we watched the video "Le chandail de hockey" in class. We have already been introduced to Maurice Richard through a Vraiment Top video and the book Connais-tu Maurice Richard? Today's video, based on the book of the same name, gave us a glimpse into the life of a young boy, Roch, who adores Maurice Richard and has a bit of an incident when a Sears order doesn't arrive exactly as ordered. You can watch the video here: Le chandail de hockey

Please ask me about my favourite movie scene and why I chose it... there are so many great ones to choose from!

POW! Problem of the Week!

One of our goals in Term 3 is to work on our problem-solving skills. This includes: deciphering and understanding new vocabulary in a word problem, trying and applying different problem-solving strategies and showing our work in a detailed and organized way.

We will be working on these skills in class as we continue exploring different types of content-related word problems as well as using open-ended, "Thinking Classroom" types of problems.

In addition, students will also have the added challenge of solving word problems on their own, too!

Introducing:

What is POW? Each week, a new word problem will be available in class: on the filing cabinet at the back of our 'front' room and on the cabinet near the adjoining door in our 'back' room.

When students are finished their class work, they can take a copy of the current week's question to work on. When the question is complete (they have showed and explained their work and clearly stated their answer) they may hand it in in exchange for a ballot they can place into the POW ballot envelope.

At the end of each month, we will pull names from the POW ballot envelope for amazingly useful prizes! Wow!
The more problems solved, the better the chance of winning!

Get your pencils sharpened and put those thinking caps on!
You've totally got this!

Ratios and Straws

Hello! Happy Tuesday!

Today in Math we continued exploring ratios and used this super-cute dog picture to write as many ratios as we could. What ratios can you find in this picture?

Also, please consider today's silly debate question: Does a straw have one hole or two?  🤔
